GRINDING PROCESS SOLUTIONS (GPS)

Industrial manufacturing consists of a large number of physical processes which are organized and carried out within a well-defined set of limits. One such process is grinding which is extensively used in manufacturing to control the attributes and features of finished components. As a finishing process, it plays a major role in controlling manufactured part’s dimensional, form and surface texture requirements. Like many other manufacturing processes, the performance indicators of a grinding process also include quality of the work-piece, cycle-time and cost of grinding.

A Systems Approach to Grinding can be further studied as (Ref: fig below) where Input to the process consist of machine tools, Operational parameters, work piece material and tooling. All these parameters interact with each other during the grinding process and give a system output and technical output. The System output is cycle time, cost per operation etc. whereas the Technical output is surface finish, dimensional accuracy etc. The Input parameters explained above can be chosen or varied as per the output requirements.

These input parameters are so interlacedthat change in one effects the other and hence the grinding output. This makes the grinding process more complex to understand and to achieve the desired output.

Micromatic Grinding Technologies (MGT) consistently strives to understand the difficulties of its customers, and assistin achievingthe desired quality output with enhanced productivity onits machines. With MGT’s 40 years of in-depth knowledge in grinding, ithas introduced GPS to help its customers in the following. (Refer Fig. 2)

How GPS works?

1. Systems Approach: To understand the interdependence of the various factors affecting the grinding process, MGT uses the systems approach. Years of rigorous experience in grinding and applying the systems approach enables MGT to achieve and surpass the grinding needs of the customer. (Refer fig 3)
2. Grind TrakTM: Grind Trak is an in-process diagnostic tool which helps to take the signature of the grinding process. It captures thepower consumed along with slide movement with respect to time. Based on the signature of the cycle, the grinding process can be analysed and optimised accordingly.
